About ADD in response to an email from a listener…..the major issue is whether ADD has ever been diagnosed….and in the case of this 30 something, I’m dubious.
Dr. Chien answers an email inquiry from a businessman who has been taking Adderall which is commonly prescribed for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The writer is an inactive private pilot who wants to actively fly. Dr. Chien has some advice and strong opinions on how to handle the diagnosis of ADD.

This is Dr. Bruce Chien, Senior AME 21016. Last year I did more than 100 medicals, of all classes. Most of these were special issuances for which telephone authorization from FAA was required. Just one was deferred.
With proper preparation, deferral can largely be avoided.
